Company: Alstom
Position: Railway simulator engineer
Alstom is a French multinational company specializing in the design, manufacture and maintenance of rail transport systems. It is the world's second largest supplier of rolling stock for high-speed trains, streetcars and metros. Alstom's simulator section is responsible for the development of driving simulators mainly for drivers. These simulators allow them to train in a safe and controlled environment to acquire the skills required to drive in different situations, either during commercial operation or under degraded conditions.
As part of the contract to develop, build and maintain the rolling stock and infrastructure of the Montreal REM, Alstom must also provide a driving simulator to train the teams. With the system provided being fully automated, the simulator must handle opening and closing of the line, performed manually by train drivers, as well as degraded conditions during commercial operation.
My objective, within the Knowledge Center and in relation with the customer and the internal project teams, was to analyze, develop and implement the different scenarios.
REM Montreal:
Understand a technical subject based on documentation, specifications and discussions with the customer and the assigned teams;
Identify the sources and causes of each situation (conventional operation, passenger incident, system failure, ...);
Search and indicate the errors detected by the TCMS (train computer system) and the ATS or SCADA posts;
Create logigrams and technical documents on the procedures to be applied by the driver, the station agents and the ROC operators;
Manage multiple teams on tasks to be carried out (line creation, 3D file modification, functional implementation, ...), representing the management of 11 people;
Create test checks lists (deployment and sanity check) to approve the functionalities of the simulator and its scenarios;
Deploy the simulator with the customer, have it tested by the training manager and future drivers, and retrieves constructive feedback for future projects.
Missions annexes:
Understand, apprehend and respond to a call for tenders estimated between 100k€ and 1M€;
Conceive an upgrade to the demonstrator to present the capabilities of Alstom's train simulators to the clients;
Learn to use the internal line design tool and create algorithms for its optimization;
Create a complete 7.5km line layout plan (track shape and signalling) following Alstom railway conventions;
Train teams in the technico-functionnal aspects of tramway signaling (SRPTC and DAS);
Allocate and guide teams according to the tasks to be carried out (creation of scenery, track positionning, signalling functionalities, ...).
